Moscow The Eastern Orthodox Church is not in union with Rome and Rome is not in union with the Eastern Orthodox Church. It was the patriarch of this Church—Athenagoras I—and the bishop of Rome—Pope Paul VI—who met during the council in Palestine and who later mutually lifted the excommunication from one another which had been in place since 1054. |
