Step Thirteen: Become aware of what you intend to buy next. Almost everyone carries around in his or her head a little shopping list of things we want to buy, the next time we have the chance. Sometimes we go ahead and buy these things even when we don't have the money. We use a credit card which we know we can't pay at the end of the month. Other times we simply build up our list. Buying things give us an emotional "rush" that is pleasurable - and often replaces the deeper pleasures of friendship, contentment, and peace.
In this exercise, we want you to make a list of the items you currently have in mind to purchase for yourself or for someone else. Is it a new car? Is it clothing? Food? Furniture? A larger home? A new addition? Or what? Being conscious of this internal list can help free us from the slavery of consumption. It helps us be mindful. Some things we buy are essentials and those should stay on the list. Other things are absolutely discretionary - knowing the difference between these is the key. Use this Worksheet.

On the Side... As you commit yourself to living simply, sustainably, and in greater solidarity with the world's poor, you have to be ready to change the very way you live. Read Driving the Speed Limit for some deeper reflections on what this means. Click here to go there.
